Pierre’s cousin, Le Corbusier, renowned pioneer of modern architecture, was appointed by Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, to create a master plan for the to-be utopian city of Chandigarh. A symbol of India’s independence and “the nation’s faith in the future.” This task, Le Corbusier took in his stride, insisting only that Pierre Jeanneret design the furniture to fill this city of dreams.
